About Black Star Rising

I am a Black Studies scholar and founder of Black Star Rising. As a child, I benefitted immensely from a village of teachers and community members who encouraged a strong self-concept and a love for Black history and culture. Their support, coupled with early exposure, made a world of difference in my formative years. I am passionate about helping families, educators and knowledge seekers to draw from the genius of Black history and culture in order to cultivate self-determination in our youth. At 13 years of age, my mentors planted the seed, "I am because we are. We are because I am," and that philosophy has guided me ever since.

I've earned a master's in Africana Studies from Cornell and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in African American Studies. But my consciousness was also shaped by Black folks outside of the academy - ordinary men and women with extraordinary intellectual capability. Our philosophy at Black Star Rising is rooted in Black Studies traditions (from within, and a part from, the university), which gives us a distinct framework and analysis on how we all get free.

Black Star Rising is an educational hub focused on consciousness-raising, cultural intelligence and relevant education. Lesson plans and teaching units can be used in the classroom or for self-study. We also offer courses and coaching for teachers, parents and professionals. Subscribe to our newsletter for upcoming opportunities.

Yours in this beautiful struggle,
Dr. TaSha
